45 οὕτως καὶ γέγραπται· Ἐγένετο ὁ πρῶτος ἄνθρωπος Ἀδὰμ εἰς ψυχὴν ζῶσαν· ὁ ἔσχατος Ἀδὰμ εἰς πνεῦμα ζῳοποιοῦν. as follows: The first man Adam became a living being. The last Adam [became] a life giving spirit. The bolded words are allusions to the latter half of LXX Genesis 2.7: καὶ ἐνεφύσησεν εἰς τὸ πρόσωπον αὐτοῦ πνοὴν ζωῆς καὶ ἐγένετο ὁ ἄνθρωπος εἰς ψυχὴν ζῶσαν Again, my [incorrect, of course] rendering would be: And [God] breathed into its face a breath of life and the man became a living being.[/INDENT] By the term "last Adam," which is generally [I know, I know, to you it would be incorrectly] interpreted as Christ, the author of 1 Cor. 15:45 is clearly linking his "life giving spirit" to the spirit that God is said to have used to create a human being (Adam). The last clause of vs 45 does not contain a verb, so the verbal action likely is assumed from the preceding Ἐγένετο (past tense, became). Whoever wrote this apparently believed that Christ was the god that breathed life-giving spirit into Adam. "Every one is an Arian! " |
