There is a mention and a partial summary of these Acts in Dictionary of Christian Biography and Literature to the End of the Sixth Century A.D., with an Account of the Principal Sects and Heresies. I have reparagraphed the entry to highlight these.

That Latin text is in a book almost 500 years old. I guess this is a start. It appears to be a distinctive non canonical text related to the field. I find it quite curious that this text has not been brought to the surface since that era. Perhaps the books were split and preserved separately as the martyrdoms of Peter and Paul? I dont know, I am just guessing why it has not been given any profile in the modern collection of NT apocrypha. |

I have been trying to find out something about this text for a few days, but in vain. I did look in the Acta Sanctorum, but, in truth, I do not know my way around this collection and I wasn't able to find Linus at all, although he should be in there under his saint's day.
I'm rather at a loss how to proceed. Hagiography is somewhat outside my area. My guess is that these Acts are very late or medieval. All the best, Roger Pearse |

Mark Vermes is still looking for a copy of his translation of the Halkin Vita, by the way.

I think one can find the text of Linus on Paul and Peter at actaapostolorvm01 I'm afraid it isn't a very good PDF.

Thanks Roger. I do not think that these Acts are to be categorised as hagiography - the lives of the saints and martrys. They may (dependent upon the date of the original manuscript) instead IMHO to be categorised within the primary new testament apocyryphal corpus on the basis that they have been strongly associated with the Leucian Acts - the primary set of (Gnostic) non canonical Acts of the Apostles. I think that they may be primary exemplars of the authorship of whoever this pseudonymous author Leucius Charinus was. |

Ideally it would be a nice thing to do to find an english translation, but given what our combined searches have returned to date, this may not be available anywhere at the moment. I do find it rather suprising that the english translation of the Acts of Linus has fallen through this net. Roger has commissioned and published translation works - perhaps these acts might one day be included in a future project. I for one would be quite willing to contribute to the sponsorship of such a project. Thanks again everyone. Please feel free to add to this thread any updates about this text. Pete |
