Smile As Seen in the Wall Street Journal

Early Christian Writings has received a mention in the Monday (Dec. 23) edition of the Wall Street Journal, in an editorial column titled "Thinking it Over" by Robert L. Bartley. A copy of it can be found online here:

Congrats on making the big time, but what a strange editorial for the WSJ.

"Most scholars, barring the stray atheist, have already accepted Jesus of Nazareth as a historical person."

Stray atheist? I guess he overlooked the pagans and Jews who doubt that Jesus was a historical person.

Kudos to Kirby. Have you noticed a marked traffic increase? I was interviewed for a piece in the LA Times that referenced one of my sites and traffic doubled for about a month afterward (from 5K hits a day to 10K hits a day). Anyway congratulations.

Warm congratulations to you, Peter!

The editorial took a swipe at Rochelle Altman, implying that she was unqualified to judge the ossuary with her Ph.D. in Medieval English, and damning her with faint praise as coordinator of an interned "discussion group". Altman clearly has considerable expertise in writing systems. An example of her work can be found <a href="http://www.st-andrews.ac.uk/~www_sd/altman_dss.html" target="_blank">here</a>. The IOUDAIOS group over which she presides includes a large number of experts (<a href="http://ccat.sas.upenn.edu/ioudaios/bio/" target="_blank">see the member list</a>). And more scholars than Eric Meyers are now questioning the authenticity of the inscription - it isn't just the questionable provenance of the find which is troubling.

Overall the editorial seemed rather tendentious. But it did come just in time for Christmas.
