Post Bell shaped Curves in genome comparisons

The following comes from Douglas Theobald's reply to a creationist critic of "29+ Evidences for Macroevolution." <a href="http://www.talkorigins.org/faqs/comdesc/camp.html" target="_blank">Link</a>

Quote:

Figure C1. Distribution of genetic distances between human and mouse genes. The histogram is the actual data from 2,019 human and mouse genes. The solid curve shows the expected distribution of genetic distances assuming only a constant rate of background mutation (~10^-9 substitutions per site per year) (reproduced from Figure 3a in Kumar and Subramanian 2002).
Those who understand the significance of bell curves should understand just how strong this evidence is.

A recent article in Science has a very similar diagram for fruitflies and mosquitoes. <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/298/5591/149/F2" target="_blank">Link</a>.

The article which it is part of will be free with a registration until October 31. <a href="http://www.sciencemag.org/cgi/content/full/298/5591/149" target="_blank">Link</a>

The Science article plot looks a bit like an F distribution, neh?

Well, some parts of it don't reach all the way up, and others it over extends. This is not evidence at all.

From the citation from "29+ Evidences," I went to the PNAS site and the cited paper which the bell shaped curve can be found at:

<a href="http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/99/2/803" target="_blank">http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/full/99/2/803</a>

The full text is free without registration.

Also if anyone wants to use that graph in Science I suggest you down load it before November -- the article will go back to subscription, site license, or pay-per-view basis at the turn of the month.
