Yeah, they got off all the big cases, I think. There are LOTS, though... I recommend picking up some books (there are lots of them) on the subject. But, if you don't want to, at least don't forget the recent rulings (namely the ones regarding making the Pledge optional). There IS a wall. ;-)

As far as where it came from, study Madison AND Jefferson. While Jefferson wasn't directly involved, he was in contact with Madison throughout, and a lot of those ideas were brought to fruition by him (though they dated back a long ways through history). The phrase a "wall of separation between Church and state" was coined in his letter to the Danbury Baptist Association. So, yes, Virginia, there is separation. ;-)
