Default Don't Look To The Bible For Answers

The Bible doesn’t have all the answers as Christians often claim. I have tried to use it to guide me in life and have come a cropper for it. Let my experience be a warning to you all.

One passage I was particularly struck by was the advice about turning swords into plough shares. Somehow this really struck a chord with me, and seemed to be as pertinent today as it was then. Look where it got me. Fair enough, it might have been sound advice in the first century. Back then there were far too many swords around for any sort of stability to exist. But the world is a much-much different place now. Empires have risen and fallen, borders have shifted, and political tensions have ebbed and flowed many times since. Unfortunately for me I didn’t pick up the bible until centuries after it was written so I expect I missed the golden period.

Maybe I should have taken independent advice before committing myself, but there you go. It’s a chance you take. At a time when 1st century swords are skyrocketing in value I find myself having disposed of a fantastic collection only to watch my plough shares go through the floor. Should I have taken a bit more time to find out that China were dumping ploughs onto the spot market? Probably. Would muck-spreader shares have been a wiser investment? Probably, but when you stumble across an insider tip from one Jew to another you don’t hang about do you. Ironically I suspect I was one of the last people to invest before the crash, so the likelihood is you could count the number of people I have beat into plough shares on one hand.

So wake up bible writers. It’s about time you updated your financial advice. It’s no wonder most Christians live in third world economies if this is the best you can do. On a personal note, my only hope of salvation now lies in the outside chance of the world ending before 2010. That way I could still make an absolute fortune at Ladbrokes. Fingers crossed.
