"As written, the bill guarantees failure because it does not emphasize abstinence," said Tom Minnery, vice president for public policy at Focus on the Family, a Colorado-based conservative group.
The bill can't be all bad if this ass hat doesn't like it.

I would certainly rather that congress and the president to do a reality check and spend the money on educating these people on how AIDS spreads & how to prevent it -- along with free & very available condoms. Emphasizing abstinence simply does not work. Oddly enough, education does.

Hmm, so Bush is pushing for a bill that does not emphasize abstinence? Did I accidentally slip into some freakish parallel universe or something?

I know, me too. I just couldn't resist. I figure he must have his head somewhre other than on his shoulders to really think that an abstinence only program works.

Default Is the religious right a tool of the Pharmaceutical industry?

<sarcasm mode, I think...>

Think about it:

Profit margins on condoms -- real thin.

Profit margins on patented anti-viral drugs -- chaaaa-chinnnnggggg!!

Condoms help prevent the spread of AIDS, thereby reducing the demand for expensive (read: high profit-margin) anti-viral drugs. More condoms means less demand for high-profit drugs.

If I were a cut-throat CEO of a big pharmaceutical company, I just might not be too unhappy with the prospect of religious zealots doing their part to increase the demand for my company's products.

The billions of taxpayer dollars that Bush wants to spend fighting AIDS will benefit Republican donors much more if those dollars are spent on high-margin products (drugs) than if they are spent on low-margin products (condoms).

</sarcasm mode>

One third goes to abstinence! What a waste of money!

Our tax dollars to force our fundie government's morality on other countries. That's 5 billion to go preach the Gospel! If it weren't for those damn liberals, we'd get the whole 15 Billion! Hell let's just let the state department run out and hire every Baptist minister we can find and every goo goo eyed god freak in their congregation to run over there and set these heathens straight! Why are we going to tie their hands and just talk abstinence and AIDS? Why don't they just be honest about what they believe? What these folks need is a good dose of JEEUSUS! Haleluejah!

It's not enough to do something humanitarian. Not enough that we want to protect Americans from the international spread of this disease. SIN!! That's the biggy. Why don't our fundie friends in Washington just tell it like it is and launch that as our new international agenda. Why just pick at the edges of the problem with terrorism and AIDS?

Oh, I think I'm going to puke!

What does the bill emphasize? Voluntary sterilization?
