Post Wah ha ha ha ha! Christian Rock Playoff!

Right now in town, there's a Christian Rock Band competition at the baptist church and it's free to attend. I was going to the Tim Hortons in hopes of meeting a friend who works there (I always tell her "You're as radiant as the moon and now less murderous"), but since her shift ended a while ago, I decided to hit the church and listen to the bands.

Snrrrrk. Mmpppph.... hee hee hee...

There were about 10, 12 bands there, all along the side of the stage waiting for their turn. Nearly every one was neatly dressed with ties, no less. I guess one was trying to pass itself off as punk (X-Treme Jesus!) by wearing- get this- plaid pyjama bottoms and flannel shirts, bleeched blonde and orangey hair, and CAT workboots (as combat boots, I'd suppose).

And the music!

I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. It was, in one word, fucking horrible. The acustics were bad, the bass was muted, the vocals were all just plain bad and most off key. The song that stuck in my head most was the one with the worst refrain- it was a song about a guy sent to Hell by benevolent and all loving Jesus Pope God, and the refrain was something like this:

"JUST GIVE ME ONE MO-AR CHANCE!

(Guitar screeching, feedback)

ONE MO-AR CHANCE!

(Screech)

ONE MO-AR CHANCE!

(Screech)

JUST GIVE ME ONE MO-AR CHANCE!

(Screech screech screech)

AAAUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!"

Oh man. At least there was free hot dogs outside. It was the only good part to a rather suicide-inspiring day I've been having.

"Christian rock bands" are neither.

When my band plays churches (hey, they're easy to book), we make sure we play "Sympathy for the Devil" and "Come to Daddy".

There's an excellent song by the pet shop boys called one more chance, and the chorus goes, "just give me one more, one more chance" etc. But i think the subject matter is a little different.

Uh.. OM why don't you pull your finger out of your uh...er...nose so you can count to 2.

Just Kidding. Sorry. Couldn't resist.

I'm with you on "Christian Rock" though. Generally REALLY bad stuff.

Peace

I can't help but make a plug for two bands that I like, even though this probably goes under Media/Pop Culture -- but - check out Dream Theater and Kings X. They are very good xtian rock bands, that kick butt, in my not always so humble opinion.
