Default Meteors

Alright, I'm arguing back and forth with a few YEC's on the baptist board and I brought up meteor strikes. My reasoning is this: The earth has been hit with 100+ big meteor strikes over the billions of years it's been around. Obviously this is a problem for YEC beliefs, because if all of these strikes happened in 12000 (or fewer) mankind in all probability wouldn't be around today. Not to mention one would think that all sorts of stories would be around involving the meteors.

In any event, I'm having a little trouble finding online resources. What I do have is from some books of mine. Needless to say that isn't very helpful when it comes to internet debating.

Can anyone help me out with this?

Here's a link to the argument Should we believe in a Young Earth, or our Lying Eyes (Page 4)

There are lots of resources out there--try a google search on "meteorite craters". I found this one in about two minutes:

Well now, don't I look silly. I don't know what my deal was when I went to google, but I couldn't find anything that seemed credible...Now it's a different story...Gulp...Whups...

BTW-Thanks!

Here's another good one, Meatros:

Terrestrial Impact Craters

If you'd like a list of refs to scientific publications on craters and impact products, let me know.

Also keep in mind that these known craters indicate the minimum number of impacts, as many craters are eroded, buried, or otherwise obscured; and with almost 3/4 of the earth's surface covered with water, the actual number of impacts is probably about four times what the terrestrial record tells us.

Thanks again all. I want to see how Helen responds to the information gleamed from some of these sites.

I decided to go with the largest Meteor: Vredefort.

Here's what I wrote:

Quote:
I was just wondering what you thought of the Vredefort crater? Why wasn't the end of all life as we know it written about in the bible? For Young Earthers this particular impact poses a problem, as it happened in Africa and was a HUGE meteor (roughly 300 km) Meteor Diameters (you can also see by this website that Helen's claim of centralized meteor hits is pretty much wrong.

Quote:
Very big impactors are rare, but if one the size of Vredefort should hit us, it would probably spell the end of life as we know it.

Colossal fires and tidal waves would sweep away landmarks, killing millions if not billions immediately. Ejecta and dust thrown from the impact zone would do the long-term damage, darkening the skies and chilling the seas for centuries, putting an end to agriculture and possibly disrupting the atmospheric processes from which we draw our air.

This is what seems to have caused the mass extinction of the dinosaurs. About 65-million years ago, an asteroid ploughed into what is now the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico, setting in motion the chain reactions that killed off Earth's dominant species in a few short years. Known as the Chicxulub crater, this is regarded as the world's third-largest.

In all honesty I expect her to either ignore it, or come up with some BS about it happening on the second day of creation (or something).

But a creationist should be able to date these craters by whether they occur under, within, or on top of "flood" sediments. Might be worth looking into the sediments under and on top of the known impact craters...

MrDarwin-Good point.

In case anyone is interested this is the response I got (not from Helen though):

Quote:
You might consider Genesis 7:16

Now you might consider as a Fundamentalist
Christian that I imagine a big hand shutting the
door of the ark. I would not laugh at the
thought; however, I would be just as likely to
imagine the blast of an asteroid collision
slamming the door shut.

Both would be under GOD's control and the
verse would still be literal. God shut him in...
I was a bit....startled by that.
