Graces? Rapture?
Okay, sorry about my non-theist-upbringing ignorance, but I've just been over to the Baptist Board to have a looksee, and I read mention of the Graces and the Rapture. What the devil are they all about?
Thanks. |

The rapture is when jebus comes back and only takes the believers with him back to heaven, everyone else is left behind to to be ruled by the antichrist or some shit like that.

Kirk Cameron will walk you right through it.
I was at the comics shop last week and saw the graphic novel of Left Behind. So tempted, so tempted.... |

Weird. I responded with a thanks after mecha_dude replying so promptly, but it seems to have disappeared. Very strange. Must cut down on my caffeine intake.
Anyway, thanks for the replies. I guess it's kinda like "Judgement day", huh? So what are the Graces - are they like the Muses, or some such thing? |

It was the official, authorized illustrated adaption of the left behind novel and/or movie. I like comics, maybe it will get through to me and save me. Then i can get raptured, and won't be "Left Behind". In Jesus' name, amen.

Grace is typically seen as God's gift of sending Christ to die for our sins. In laymen's terms this grace is basically God being nice enough to offer us lowly sinners salvation. Often you'll hear some Christians say that they are not saved by faith or works, but by God's grace.
I have also seen 5 such graces that "good Christians" are supposed to emulate. I'll spare you the bible verses but here are the 5: 1) Humility 2) Repentence 3) Faith 4) Commintement 5) Generosity Some flavors of Christianity believe that if one trys to adhere to those graces, they somehow become closer to emulating the very grace of God, which of course, is the ultimate grace. If you aren't totally confused by now... I present to you one of my favorite brands of quackery: the Rapture! Some christian denominations believe that when Christ makes his second coming it will bring about what is known as The Rapture [insert spooky music]. When The Rapture occurs believers in Christ will be taken physically from the earth into the kingdom of Heaven. Those who do not believe will supposedly be left behind in sort of a hell on earth. I believe there are passages in the book of Revelations that suggest those of us left on earth will have one last chance to repent before God flushes the whole proverbial cosmic toilet. Hardcore rapture kooks think they will be taken no matter where they are. So, they could be driving a car and poof! Off to heaven they go!Most main stream denominations think that the rapture is a bunch of rubbish. Of course, this is but one of many odd notions that Christian denominations can't seem to agree on. If you need a laugh break take a look at: The Rapture Index. As of Oct 2nd the Rapture Index was at 169. Evidently this means people should start to vanish any time now. [ October 21, 2002: Message edited by: Bibliophile ]
|

What would be mainstream though? I always thought my family was mainstream, i believe my mother is baptist and my sisters are youth-group denomination. They both believe in the rapture.
I remember once i complained to my sister when i was in Jr. High that some kids said i looked like i was on drugs (must have been really tired, had bags under my eyes). She told me to tell them i was looking in the sky waiting for the lord to come on the clouds and take me away. That's where the eye strain came from. Unitarians are terrified that people take the rapture seriously. Or hell for that matter. If i believed, i would probably be a unitarian universalist. But there would be no kirk cameron.
