Post Lee Spetner's Not by Chance

I'm looking for a good review of this book but have been unable to find it. I think a while back NCSE did a review of maybe 30 books that were being considered for schools that included it but I haven't been able to find it.

What kind of creationist is he? ID? OEC? YEC?

His argument seems to be based on the no new information claim.

Thanks.

In addition to Korthof's excellent (as usual) review, here's some other stuff to check out:

<a href="http://www.nctimes.net/~mark/bibl_science/spetner.htm" target="_blank">A Lost Chance</a> -- another review.

<a href="http://groups.google.com/groups?q=musgrave+spetner&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=FGo6PMD%2BdPKrTNJD7v%2BTDCrP%2BdBE%404ax.co m&rnum=3" target="_blank">T.O. Post</a> -- by Ian Musgrave.

<a href="http://groups.google.com/groups?q=talkorigins+musgrave+spetner&hl=en&lr=&ie =UTF-8&selm=0%3DRbOvtrBoJQ08U9YYX9M%2Bsm6L18%404ax.com& rnum=1" target="_blank">T.O. Post</a> -- also be Musgrave.

<a href="http://groups.google.com/groups?selm=3c621f7f.12227990@news.mira.net" target="_blank">More Musgrave in T.O.</a> -- this is the best one; if you don't read any of the others, read this.

<a href="http://groups.google.com/groups?q=musgrave+spetner&start=10&hl=en&lr=&ie=UT F-8&selm=Gw8IPSAw3rK3vo9J3EjRnws108ZF%404ax.com&rnum =11" target="_blank">Another one</a>

Simply put, Spetner's information argument is inconsistent and irrelevant, and even if it weren't, it's still wrong.

Spetner isn't a YEC. I don't think he's a OEC either, but he believes in some sort of "guided" evolutionary process. He belongs to some sort of Orthodox Jewish sect.

I'm not sure exactly. What it is that he believes is certainly incompatible with YEC (which doesn't stop them from vigorously promoting him), but is pretty hostile to what is usually considered TE. TE is not thought of as being contrary to evolutionary theory in any way.

Here's from another <a href="http://groups.google.com/groups?q=jewish+spetner+group:talk.origins&hl=en&l r=&ie=UTF-8&selm=4dHwOh7Gdp28g0pgUv5EtMIHH8la%404ax.com&rnum =2" target="_blank">Musgrave post</a>:

Point the second, Spetner isn't a creationist, in any reasonable definition of the word. He is Jewish, closely allied with an old earth orthodox group, and believes that mutation is not random. He's sort of neo-lamarkian. That doesn't stop creationists from quoting his work though.

"Physicist Dr. Lee M. Spetner's new book has biologists and geneticists across the country praising this book as one of the most serious challenges to the modern theory of evolution. "Dr. Spetner has an extraordinary ability to present complex mathematical, statistical, and biological issues in a comprehensible manner."--Rabbi Joseph Elias, The Jewish Observer "It is certainly the most rational attack on evolution that I have ever read"--Professor E. Simon, Department of Biology, Purdue University"

Obviously Amazon wants to sell books but I can't seem quoteing out of context. Aside from the ones already given, what other reviews/comments are there? Has his arguments in that book been published or is he to a victim of the evil conspiracy?

Oh, he's a physicist, is he? I don't know of many physicists who are such experts on biology that they're qualified to start throwing out major theories.

Yeah, that's what I said. I was told he was a Bio which apparently makes it ok. I was also told that he spent years teaching information theory at John Hopkin's university.
