Fun with Christian brains
Here's something fun that happened to me yesterday.
There's a park here in town with a lake and a walking trail that I like to go to exercise. I was walking along and was approached by these two kids. The oldest did all the talking; she couldn't have been more than 15 or 16. The younger one was wearing a t-shirt that said "Victory" with the t being a cross and he just stood there. Anyway, she was very polite and asked me if I minded a few questions about spirituality. I figured I'd throw her for a loop and agreed and the conversation went something like this: (she's reading all these questions off a card, BTW.) girl: Do you believe religion is important to most people? Me: To most people, sure. girl: Is it important to you? Me: No. girl: Do you regularly go to church? Me: No. girl: Are you confident you will go to heaven? Me: I know for a fact that I won't go to heaven. (For the first time she goes off script.) girl: Why is that? Me: Well, I'm an atheist, I don't believe in the afterlife. girl: Well, uh.. I guess there's no point to the last question. Me: Yeah. girl: Yeah, it's 'If you were standing before God, how would you justify your entry into heaven?' Me: Your right. girl: I would've invited you to go through this booklet… but I guess not. Me: yeah, it would probably be a waste of both out time. And that was it, but in retrospect I should have gone through the booklet with her. Maybe I could have gotten her to really think a little. A couple of interesting side notes: As I continued around the lake there was another pair; an older fellow (older than the first girl) and a younger girl with the same "Victory" t-shirt. At the time he had three Asian girls in conversation so he didn't ask me, which is too bad, I would have loved to turn his brains to mush. And lastly, as I came close to completing my loop of the lake I came across the first pair again. They were talking to someone else and as I passed the younger boy was staring right at me. I had my sunglasses on so he couldn’t see I was staring right back at him. I couldn't tell if the little guy was curious, mad or afraid. It's a good thing I was wearing sunglasses or he would have see my flaming red eyes. |
