Talking Arrogance and Ignorance

On another forum I got this reply:

--------------------------------
RufusAtticus:
But that's not how development works. Everything is laid out in fetal and early childhood development. That's how our bodies work. An easy example is female reproduction. A woman has no use for a uterus or a birth canal until she hits puberty, yet she is born with them. Your argument would have us expectation a girl to lack most of her internal reproductive organs until she is about seven. (Actually, the way some people act, she shouldn't get them until she is engaged.) Even more surprising is that she is born with every single ova she will ever release in her lifetime. According to Petreley’s Rule of Development, she should not even produce one until the day before she ovulates.

NPetreley:
ROFL!!!

No, your argument is that the first egg has to form and then sit there and wait until the girl hits puberty.

No no no -- I got that wrong.

Your argument is that ALL THE EGGS HER BODY WILL EVER PRODUCE IN HER ENTIRE LIFETIME have to be in some partial state of formation when she's a baby, otherwise she'll never form them.
----------------------------------------

It's amazing how a fundamental lack of science education can make you act like an expert on everything. I guess we can forgive petreley. He's probably too busy hanging snakes on fence posts to make it rain to open a biology textbook.

The sad truth is that this sort of thing is not all that uncommon. Even some 'educated' people let myth, ledgend, religon, and misinformation that sounds better color their perceptions.

No suprises here.

Question

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't it the case that the ovaries DO contain all the eggs a woman will ever produce?

...Which would be why you found this post noteworthy...

Agreed. I am kinda confused as to the point being made with this thread, though, I'm more than certain that is an error in my understanding. I think its just that NPetreley is quite ignorant. His post really confuses me.

However, just to make it certain, from atleast a biological perspective, females are born with all the eggs, its just that they "don't do nothin'" until the girl reaches puberty.

This is correct. The eggs are stuck in prophase 1.

From an <a href="http://gened.emc.maricopa.edu/bio/bio181/BIOBK/BioBookmeiosis.html" target="_blank">online text</a>:

Quote:
At birth each female carries a lifetime supply of developing oocytes, each of which is in Prophase I. A developing egg (secondary oocyte) is released each month from puberty until menopause, a total of 400-500 eggs.
Fertilization by sperm will cause the egg to re-enter and complete meiosis 1. In fact, by the time implantation in the uterus occurs, several cell divisions have already taken place.

Incidentally, everyone should bookmark this page:

It's a fabulous on-line biology book, with tons of pictures. Yep, it even covers evolution!
