Unbelievable. Fearless Leader starts out by letting everyone know how great it is to have freedom of religion, but then specifically tells us to ask the "Almighty God" (we all know which one he is referring to). Of course, this eliminates everything other than monotheism. Eh...newsflash George. Religion doesn't necessarily entail worshipping a single, almighty deity, or any deity at all for that matter.

When is he going to acknowledge that the nonreligious exist?

The proclamation clearly favors one type of religion over all others, and even specifically asks us to engage in monotheistic worship.

Convervative Christians like Bush seem wholly incabable of understanding the concept of religious neutrality. Of course, the Bible forbids it. You are either with God or against him, just as Dubya has proclaimed that you are either with America or with the terrorists. Excluded middle fallacy?

Yes, but the public eats it up.

In his mind he has included everyone worth including.

Inside the head of Dubya: "Christians? Check. Jews? I Have to. Muslims? Hey, I'm a Uniter, Not A DividerTM. If you're not one of the big three then you don't count."

Of course, the flag waving, "God Bless America", Feel-Good-ChristiansTM will go right along with it. Five years from now they will cite it as "proof" we are a Christian NationTM.

By requesting that we ask this "Almighty God" for protection, how is this significantly different from the widely criticized statements by Robertson/Fallwell stating that we have lost the protection of "Almighty God" and need to nationally beg to get it back?

This "Almighty God" has quite a protection racket going.

Does this particular "Almighty God" dole out turf protection packages based on Prayers Per Capita (PPC) or Total Governmental Piety (TGP)? Does he operate on a pray-as-you go basis, or are we contracted for a specific amount of time? What kind of punishments are we to fear if we don't follow through on our end? :

You shall fear eternal gnashing of teeth!!! Bwah, haw, haw, haw!!
GW really pisses me off. I didn't really care for Al Gore until he grew a beard. I don't think that even a bitchin' set of mutton chops could salvage my opinion of GW.

Typing error... I believe in Mankin"D", I'm a Republican (not in the sense that americans have, but in that of the French Revolution and in that of Revolution of 1910), atheist and general ceptic.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim January 16, 2002, as Religious Freedom Day. I urge all Americans to observe this day by asking for the blessing and protection of Almighty God for our Nation, and to engage in appropriate ceremonies and activities in their homes, schools, and places of worship as a sign of our resolve to protect and preserve our religious freedom.
I don’t know whether to laugh or to cry.

Welcome, Popemon, and nice post. Except I think the part above shows far more coherence than could ever be accomplished by our beloved Shrubya.

Nice nick, BTW.

Question

It's a little old, but seems appropriate here. This quote from Bush is from a CNN article:

Quote:
Religious liberty is more than the right to believe in God's love; it is the right to be an instrument of God's love.
I'm glad I have the freedom to be a pawn for a deity that I don't believe exists (at least I have the right to believe it exists???

This reminds me of a card found in a Baptist church describing their beliefs. One of them was "freedom of religion". I don't remember the exact wording, but it basically said you were free to practice any kind of Christianity that you wanted to.

I really, really wish GWB would quit declaring "days"! What does that man think it's gonna do, win a war?!!!

Then again, that's probably exactly what he thinks.

I agree, ohwilleke, *despair*.

I guess it's stuff like this that makes it hard for us to just forget about religion. BTW the Baptists were historically strong supporters of separation of church and state but I guess they have forgotten the lesson.
