I know atheists don't believe that Abraham and Peter, the founders of Judaism and Christianity, were worshipping a real God. (In Abraham's case, some don't think he even existed.) But what about the question of whether they are morally admirable? I think of them as being courageous, in that they defied a hostile environment to set up something they believed in.

Do you think that, ignoring the question of whether they were theologically right, Abraham and Peter were the kind of person that someone should look up to?

My point? Well, I was just thinking in terms of the fact that Christianity sees an opposition between the untamed world in general, and the people that God has selected. And the best examples of this are the first Jew and the most important of the first Christians. So I thought a good question to ask would be, How do atheists see Abraham and Peter?

In Hebrews Chapter 11 there is an honor roll of "Faith" several individuals and events the writer thought were worthy of special mention. My curiousty prompted by Magazine's thread led me to thinking about how even on little data people form opinions about the characters of others.

Here is a list ranked from best (IMO) to worst of several of those names and little snap judgements. What impression do you have them apart from their being believers.

1 - MOSES - Hey Charlton Heston need I say more.

2 - GIDEON Overlooked and underrated. Good family man, Social activist.

3 - ISAAC - Kind of a mamas boy (thirty something still living at home). That whole bit about calling you wife your sister he got from his father. Not a great parent. Generally just a working stiff.

4 - ABRAHAM - Once yo get past the hype tried several busines adventures, knocked around a bit searching for just the right neighborhood. Everyone totally overlooks his second wife and later offspring, why is that.

5 - JEPTHAH - General & Politician, rose to the role thrust upon him.A man of his times.

6 - NOAH - Yeah he was a drunk but ahhh so lovable.

7 - BARAK Ineffectual general, who hid behind the leadership of a woman and had no problem using the work of other's to his advantage.

8 - SAMSON Spoiled womanizer ... A made for TV personality.

9 - JACOB Let's see 2 wives 2 concubines twelve sons. A liar and a cheat. Personally I like ESAU much better.

10 - DAVID - Bill Clinton's role model.

11 - SAMUEL - A MULLAH's MULLAH ... laid the blue print for the Taliban.

regards
