A minor error in the above has been pointed out: it was in 1956 rather than 1955 that the legislation was enacted that changed the nation's motto to "In God We Trust" and had it added to our paper currency. "In God We Trust" had been on various coins, beginning with a two cent piece in 1864, at the order of the Secretary of the Treasury. On July 30, 1956, President Eisenhower signed the bill, but the first money (the one dollar silver certificate) containing IGWT did not circulate until the next year.

Where does the 1955 date come from then? Is there some other bill that Newdow might be refering to?
