Very often, you hear someone saying that there were many other messiahs in ancient Palestine during the first century.

Prof. G. A. Wells, Isaac Asimov and others have stated that Jesus went unnoticed by the Jewish authorities because he was just another messiah, just another wonder worker, just another itinerant ascetic teacher. Asimov says that there were many people like this after the Maccabean period and up until the Jewish War. Asimov says that ancient historians documented these other messiahs, but he himself doesn't mention the sources.

I remember reading about some of these many years ago (in the days before the internet) but I cannot remember which books. I remember reading about a guy who was reputed to have the ability to fly. Another one I read about raised people from the dead and learned magic in Egypt, but predated Jesus of Nazareth by about a hundred years.

How about it? Anyone else have sources about 'other' messiahs?
