Is Willy Wonka God?
Let us review:
He lives in an isolated and gated compound separate from humanity. No one ever goes in and no one ever comes out until He permits them. He has several minions that unconditionally serve Him. He has no female companion. His plan is to offer a contest rewarding a chosen few with endless treats. The hero is an only child living in poverty. The hero child’s mother is single and there is no mention at all of his mysterious father. A man named Joseph leads the child as a father figure. He tests people on their ability to obey him unconditionally and then banishes them from his paradise when they fail. His closest associate is deceptively promoted as an agent of evil, but it is all just a ploy, they are really friends pulling a prank. He offers a child his kingdom as a result of testing the child’s fealty to him and only him. Ascension in a great glass elevator and eternal goodies are the culmination of his plan. Or perhaps it is the other way around in reverse ~ these morality plays are always so deceptively confusing. That Roald Dahl sure was off his nut ~ but could write a zinger of a goofy story. He also seems to know in advance what is going to happen.

Are you talking about the book or the movie? He had a dad in the book- there is actually an illustration of Mr. and Mrs. Bucket. If I recall correctly they both had to work and so were unable to escort Charlie to the factory.
Also, it was only in the movie that that kids were tested with the false Mr. Slugworth. That character didn't appear in the book. |

Wait!
I hereby deny Wonko and accept Plush Cthulhu as my Lord and Master(tm)!! I'd like to put a c-note on Pascal's wager while I'm at it. [ October 26, 2002: Message edited by: Ronin ]</p> |
