Hebrew and Aramaic are two distinct Semitic languages; some other well-known ones are Arabic and Akkadian.

They are placed into the same language family because they have a lot of basic vocabulary and grammar in common -- features that generally do not get borrowed. Something like Romance or Germanic or Slavic languages.
