Ugh. I did a little looking around, and stumbled on this lovely tale of the Phelps's home life. Actually, I read it years ago, but rereading was just as shocking as the first time. Fred is one fucked up individual.

Reading over the link above makes me more than a little nostalgic for the time I believed there was a God who had some creative and excruciating things in store for those who beat their kids unconscious with mattock handles and such.

I've met that moron, Fred. He picketed Tulsa's very first gay pride march. He's a buffoon...and a pretty sorry one at that. And he's not nearly as confident without his horde behind him. My friend and I were walking to the corner of the block to pick up signs to carry when Phelps approached us and asked if we knew about the parade. We told him "Hell, we're in it!!" and he held up the Bible and said: "So, you've never read this?" To which we replied: "Oh, yeah. We have. Lovely...great fiction." And we walked off. The man was left speechless. It was just him and one other person. I didn't even know it was him until he was pointed out to me later on that day. I just thought to myself: "Cool! I gave shit to Phelps!!" The man is pathetic and his horde is quite small. I've never seen more than ten protesters at any of his appearances. He even picketed a graduation in Jenks, Oklahoma because one of the kids graduating had started a GSA in Jenks' high school. I've met that kid as well...smart and funny. The WBC is gonna go down soon. I feel it.

Never knew that (regarding the link demonstrating Phelp's parenting skills). Most of it was read with my fists clenched. There are a few people that if I knew I could absolutely get away with it, and that their absence would not severely impact those close to them, I would gladly wipe off the face fo the earth and bear little problems of conscience in doing so. Phelps is now one of them.

By the way, 11 members of the Westboro Baptist Church did picket the high schoolers as planned. A followup was in the paper the other day.

There was a counter demonstration with more people. No one from Dover, NH joined the Baptists.

Why, oh why, can't the fundies realize that there are people who are not interested in that piece of biased historical fiction dubbed the buy-bull?

Actually, every Christian I know - and I know a lot of "fundies" - is embarrassed by Phelps and the total distortion of the Bible that he preaches. How he could preach about Romans with so much hatred that contradicts Paul's many references to the pivotal importance of love elsewhere in his writings is astonishing.

These are the same people that drove all the way from Kansas to College Station, TX to protest at A&M (yes, that sounds a little odd, but...)

A while back an Aggie athlete named Dan Campbell declared he was "proud to go to a school where women like men and men like women". Of course it was his constitutional right to say such a thing, but the administration ruled that since he was speaking at a university sponsored event he was considered a representative of the university, and was asked to publicly apologize for his statements. He did, and the God Hates Fags folks up in Topeka had a field day, saying that A&M was a "fag infested school" that promoted "godlessness" or some other such nonsense. They came to protest, but they didn't get very far on campus, we Aggies have a way of, ummm.... "redirecting" these kinds of people

But wait, it gets better, when the Bonfire tragedy occured in 1999 (of which I was a part), these wonderful people then declared that the tragedy and the 12 deaths that resulted from it was God's wrath for the administration's decision to ask Campbell to apologize.

Where do these people COME FROM?
