If you had to leave your home country where would you go?
Ok so this question is highly rhetorical, but if you had to pick a country to live in based soley on freedom from religion where would you go?
I live in the US, and I'm not planning on leaving anytime soon, but who has a really great track record on church state seperation? I realize that the US may be the only nation that was explicitely founded with the concept in mind, however sometimes it seems that other nations that have state religions use more common sense in their lawmaking policies than we do. Any thoughts? Those of you from outside the US care to educate us? |

Italy or France...thus exposing myself as a hopeless romantic fool, as these are not the most practical choices. But the pictures are so pretty.

New Zealand for the kayaking if nothing else. Apparently kayak racing is big over there. Sisson makes some awesome multisport boats. What's the US to New Zealand exchange rate. Sisson sells factory direct to anywhere in the world and made the comment that the exchange rate made their boats cheap in the UK and US.
Edited to add that Kiwis appear to be nuts. They race 5-6m long by .45m wide boats in whitewater. cool. Kiwis charging it [ February 08, 2002: Message edited by: scombrid ]
|

My first move would be to Canada. If not Canada, I'd try the UK.

Sure, Americans (USAians) like to razz Canadians. But when the chips fall down, we're comforted to know we have a lifeboat to the North.
For that matter, USAians might treat the other nearby English-speaking nations as our "Plan B" homelands: Bahamas, Bermuda, and Belize. The UK has some nice turf in Turks & Caicos, less than 1000 miles from Florida. And they almost speak English in Jamaica. I don't know enough about these places to rate their religious freedom quotient, as the OP wants. [ February 08, 2002: Message edited by: Grumpy ]
|

If I had to base my decision solely on the freedom of C&S it certainly wouldn't be USA.
Western Europe or Canada sounds good. I probably in reality would have to pick an English speaking country if I left the US. However, I live in Minnesota where the fundies aren't too terribly bad (considering what I here about the South) Especially, if you consider my governor. |
