Judicial Nominee Gets Second Chance (requires free registration)
Quote:
The Republicans brought Hispanic recording artists to perform in the Capitol last week to "demonstrate how the Estrada nomination resonates in the Hispanic community," held a session on Tuesday devoted to the Senate's role in confirming nominees, conducted a prayer session today and have presented numerous letters from President Bush and his counsel, Alberto R. Gonzales, deploring the situation.
But today's vote showed that Republicans had made no progress in persuading any other Democrats to break ranks.

At the heart of the debate is Justice Owen's dissent from a ruling interpreting the state's law allowing a teenager to obtain an abortion without notifying her parents if she can show a court that she is mature enough to understand the consequences.
In her dissent, Justice Owen said the teenager in the case had not demonstrated that she knew that there were religious objections to abortion and that some women who underwent abortions had experienced severe remorse.
. . .
Senator Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, asked Justice Owen to respond in writing to critics who have challenged her assertion that she was simply following Supreme Court precedent in insisting that a minor understand the religious objections to abortion.
