One possibility: change "under God" to "under all the gods".

That is more honestly ecumenical, but it would be distasteful to believers in only-God religions.

But as long as too many people react as indignantly as the original Russian Old Believers had done to crossing themselves with three fingers instead of two, not much is going to change.

Good idea, but "under all gods" (dropping "the") may flow better. Me, I will continue to remain silent through "under god".
