Default Since this thread is about why anyone would WANT to believe in God...

...I'll leave it here. I think the desire to believe in a god is intimately linked to why we are discussing the EoG in the first place.

There was a time I wanted to believe in God. Then I began to think about what that really meant, in terms of how much that god would know about me (everything...absolutely everything), and what "forever" really means.

No, I don't wish there was a god anymore than I wish there was a Superman. I can take responsibility for myself and face my own death without clinging to last-ditch hopes that I will live forever, because I've thought about it, and living forever would be hell, no matter where I am. I don't need to believe people will get their just desserts when they die.

We're all just bacteria in a giant petri dish. I can accept that.

Thumbs down

No, I don't wish there was a god. It would just muddle things up.

It's funny, I see some parallels with my giving up a dependence on needing a god and giving up my expectations to find the "perfect" partner (or a close facsimile). Yeah, I have to work, raise my kids, decide what to do about investments, buying a car, upkeeping the house and so on all on my own, but it's not so bad. You learn what you can, make your decision, learn some more if your not happy with the first decision and act accordingly.

There is a satisfaction in managing on your own.

I would rather karma be real than any sort of personal deity.

Hell= Ketchup
Earth= Icecream with ketchup

Objection!

You think that we are "just bacteria in a giant petri dish" and you can accept that. As a freethinker, I would rather be in charge of my own destiny.

So you're saying that, within the petri dish, bacteria have no free will?
