Verdict: Nickelodeon's My Family is Different
So what did you folks think about this show? After hearing Falwell speak about how it's wrong to hate, I said to the screen, "Speak for yourself fatty."
I liked how that one religious teen in the back seemed to want to scream, "Faggotry is wrong!" His hatred was too thinly veiled. Overall though, it was fairly balanced, but they never went too deep into why people think homosexuality is wrong. Ho-hum. |

I found out about the show because I was watching CNN earlier in the day. They had Ellerman (the producer) and Falwell doing a face-off discussion. The footage of Falwell had been done and sent to Ellerman without Falwell having seen the actual program until it was broadcast. On the CNN program, several hours in advance of the show, he openly criticized it as "promoting the homosexual agenda" even though he admitted he hadn't seen it.
I watched the show and I also thought it to be balanced, although they probably should've had at least one token Christian adult to balance out the three gay adults. However the opinions given by the Christian kids more than sufficed to cover their religious viewpoint. Now the program was about tolerance and respect for kids who were the children of gay parents. Falwell in his quip makes the point that the kids are not to be held responsible for the actions of the parents. Does this not contradict the Bible and the concept of original sin? I mean the entire book is full of instances of God bringing punishment down on succesive generations of hapless victims for the sins of the parents. As for CNN--I'm beginning to wonder why they always seem to have Fallwell and Buchanan on tap so readily. It seems to me they hardly ever interview any other clergy when some religious issue comes up, with the possible exception of some Catholics recently. I have also deteced a definitely conservative, pro-Enron, and anti-Palestinian undercurrent to some of their programming, especially "Lou Dobbs Money Line". |

Now why do you think that the OT is (mostly) silent on the topic of lesbians? m. m. |

Here's my local paper's story;
Lancaster Eagle-Gazette It is so typical of them to generalize e.g.,"local residents had no idea". The reporter can't find one resident who thought the show was worthwhile? This is the same lady who asked me anopinion about gay boy scouts. I told her I supported thembut that I was an Atheist and I wish she would include their side of the story. She told me she "would pray for me"! Very professional. |

Yeah but how did that start. Who decided two guys going at it was gross? I don't find it particularly erotic, but I don't find it gross either. And why is it that guys have no problem watching 2 girls go at it? I suppose it all comes down to the fact that penises are inherently ugly as hell and guys have hairy asses. |

I watched most of the show and found it rather dull. I guess I was expecting a serious treatment of the issues. I should have known better. It was basically two groups of kids saying: "Families with gay parents are just as loving as 'normal' families." or "Homosexuality is wrong because that's what the Bible says." The kids pretty much said the same thing over and over again - I found it very repetitive. But then again, the show was targeted at kids. |
