Who wears 137 pads with plastic armor, mouth guard, helmet, neck brace, and plays for a whole 10 seconds in a row? And which sport is more likely to have a guy continue playing with a fractured ankle and a giant gash on his head? trillian |

Preserves are the general class of "preserved" fruits and vegetables. Jelly, in the sense of preserves, (and as someone mentioned above) is from strained fruit - i.e. it is smooth. Jam has the pips and stuff still in it. Raspberry jam is my favourite. Marmalade is a specific name for preserves made from oranges, and can be chunkey or smooth (although smooth marmalade is an abomination), so could theoretically fall into either "jam" or "jelly" class. Paddington Bear eats marmalade sandwiches. Chutneys are generally made from vegetables instead of fruit, and tend to be savoury instead of sweet. Pickles, as in Branston Pickle, is a chutney. Pickles, as in pickled dill pickles, are not a chutney, but a pickled (stored in vinegar or salt water) preserved vegetable. Pickeled garlic turns blue and is very tasty. Jelly is also the name of what the Yanks call jello - the gelatin stuff you use for making trifles. This, however, is not a preserve. |
