Red face The worlds tackiest religion

On tonights Conan O'Brian show he showed actual pictures out of a Christian catalog featuring figurines of Christ playing sports with little kids. They had him in a football pose, soccer, baseball, hockey and a couple of others. These were the ones with actual photos of the product. They also offered him skiing, golfing and believe it or not doing Tae Kwan Do.

This got me to thinking. Is there a religion that is tackier or more crass? Mainstream of course. The lengths that these people will go to make a buck. Taking something that they claim is so sacred and turing it into a tool to reap earthly reward. Christians are easily the most twisted of the theist!

The Raelians are the worlds tackiest religion, very popular in Montreal for some reason...

Oh it's easily the most crass. Can you imagine Buddhists doing such a thing?
The fundies' religious take should have made it a laughing stock but outside of web-sites like this very few are laughing unfortunately.

One of the tackiest, most horrifying things I have ever seen was in a Spanish church: a life-size crucified Christ with actual hair on its head and body. You have to go a long way to beat Spanish Catholicism for sheer unadulterated gruesomeness.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the subject, but shouldn't Scientology be mentioned here?

Oh I don't know, how about those Portugese nativity figurines that are taking a shit? I misremember what they're called though.

You're damn right it should. I once stumbled into their sanctuary in LA. It was like a scene out of a movie, the place was posh beyond belief. There were leather armchairs and scifi paintings on the walls from the BattleField Earth book. The place looked deserted but very well maintained. We were taken on a guided tour by a young woman with an English accent and an expensive suit, she could have been a Victoria's Secret model. She explained to us in all seriousness the significance of every picture and why Terl (whatever) was antagonising Johnny Goodboy Tyler and how that related to life. Anyone who writes a book where the protagonist's middle name is Goodboy should be shot. Anyway being a scifi fan I kinda got into it and when the movie came out I watched it. Damn Hubbard.

You can mention Scientology but I really don't think it fits. It's not a major religion and it really isn't tacky. It may be moronic beyond compare but not tacky.

What happened to Xianity? You look at the archetecture and the art that was inspired by the faith and compare that to now. The crappy bumperstickers, the Xian music and the weird paintings and other misc. "art" that it inspires today.

Everything I see in the Xian catalogs these days is something that you would find in a trailer park.

From "slivers of the true cross" and other junk sold to pilgrims in the Holy Land, to the trinkets associated with Becket's shrine in Canterbury (before it was destroyed), xianity has always had a tacky side.
