Default God the abusive father?

God is often characterized as a father, especially in the New Testament-specifically in the sense that he apparentally created the human race.
But what kind of a father is God? Given his OT Genocide, threats of cannibalism and rape, his destruction using floods, heavenly fire, and foreign armies; and of course the "hell" treatment, isn't God technically being an abusive father? While a father of course disciplines his children, there is a certain limit until it becomes unacceptable and extremely hurtful and traumatizing physically and mentally to the child. God as characterized in the bible goes over this limit. Sad thing is some Christians believe this is justified, and child abuse is frequent among some fundamentalists, who feel they must put the 'fear of God' into the child.
And there's stuff like Matthew 23 and Luke 14...

This is probably my largest bone of contention with xians claiming atheists are immoral. I have to wonder how a personal moral code could always be worse than one based off the teachings of a homicidal maniac.

Pharoah got you down? Kill the first born children of the whole population. Yeah, that seems fair.

I think Child Protective Services should step in and revoke custody from God for being an unfit parent.

Allowing your children to starve when it is within your ability to feed them is unforgivable.

Absolutely, the analogies of God as "loving Father" and Christ as the "bridegroom" both fail horribly unless one is willing to admit that the "Father" is actually an unfit and abusive parent and Christ the ultimate abusive husband.

"Love me or I'll kill you. Your free choice"!

... sounds like a classic batterer to me.

:notworthy:

In addition, I don't think Child Protective Services would have much use for the excuse "well it's within my ability to feed my kids, but I can't intrude on the Free Will of my other children who take away their food and beat them up".

(of course that doesn't even address starvation caused by "natural evil" - famine, drought, etc. Wonder how the "parent" gets out of that one without blaming it on the other kids... hmmmmm.)

Thanks COAS! I needed a little worship to cheer me up.

If there is a God, He isn't worthy of being in my presence .

Should a God read that, should that be taken as a request that God leave your presence?

Hmmmm... if such said God possessed the trait of "omnipresence", would that be possible?

Yup. He doesn't deserve to be near someone who actually cares about all people and would end all suffering if it was within their ability to do so.
