What can we All agree on?
Madalyn wasn't kidding! Trying to rally atheists IS like trying to herd a bunch of cats. Those of us who are cat lovers know what a laughable proposition that is! You won't find a more independent animal anywhere. Maybe that's why so many atheists I know are cat lovers as well!
In other threads, Digital Chicken (and others) have suggested that we need to band together with certain liberal theists who also favor the separation of church and state. This sounds logical although it invokes the image of trying to herd cats AND armadillos. Is Church/State Seperation (CSS) an issue we can ALL agree on? |

I don't know that we could even agree about whether we agree or disagree.

I don't think that we all have to agree on every aspect, but we can hopefully identify some of the main areas and chunks that produce the largest cohesion. As Alonzo mentioned in another post, many orgs then offer a diverse, but not exhaustive, portfolio of the biggies and provide some focus and oversight.
As for cats, there of course has been a lot of truth traditionally in that analogy to independent nontheistic thinkers. And then I think of lions, which hunt cooperatively and live somewhat socially [though I do not suggest that we emulate their social system 100%, etc]. The religious fundamentalists have many of the same problems. You've got everything from your militia-minded xians, to your "liberal" UU ones, and that's just xianity. There are the fanatical anti-abortion types [that have the "holocaust" bumper stickers] and the ones that would prefer a woman's right to choose. Catholics and Protestants. I think that many infidels, of all flavors, would agree that we do not want the govt to dictate to us what we may or may not believe about god and religion, and we do not want to be discriminated against in the workplace or marketplace as a result of a theistic hegemony.
