Where did all the goddesses go?
I splurged and bought myself a "goddess" calendar for 2002. It has really pretty pictures of various goddesses throughout cultures.
Why is it that today's major religions have no goddesses? Perhaps that's the problem with the muslim/judeo/christian world--no female spirits to balance out the "yin" or the "animus." Seriously though, all the major religions worship only a male figure. Why the switch from polytheism to monotheism? scigirl |

I saw a program dealing with this very topic a few months ago; essentially the “mother goddess” concept of early humans was built upon the essential female role in society, the women were much more critical to the survival of a tribe for they were the ones that carried children; the program asserted the change form the “mother goddess” to “father god” occurred due to a feeling of resentment felt by early males due to their lesser importance in early society. The program goes on into much more detail and is more complicated, but that is the sum of what its thesis was.

Careful scigirl because we do and She is kind of known around the world. Protestants do not have one because we only meet her in purgatory when we enter the yang peroiod from where She takes us into heaven and there assumes the drivers seat. Yes, much like Khrisna and Arguna. We have religious art calender this year. [ January 17, 2002: Message edited by: Amos ]</p> |

Religions that feature multiple deities usually feature both sexes of deity, with female ones being worshipped alongside of male ones.
However, single deities are usually male, since they are made in the likeness of rulers -- who are usually male. However, it's worth noting that much of Christianity has had a backdoor kind of polytheism: cults of saints, who come in both sexes. And the biggest of these is Jesus Christ's mother, who is essentially the Christian Mother Goddess. |
