Blind test of astrology
On My horoscope was dead on! I offered to do a test of astrology by having someone give three or four birthdates, one of which was there own, and then I would get four astrological profiles from astro.com and give them in random order, seeing if the person can identify their own. Lobstrosity volunteered to be a guinea pig, and gave these dates:

I will most likely go through them paragraph by paragraph, rating what I consider as hits, misses, or some strange combination of the two. I will try to reduce this to a score for each one. To eliminate potential bias based on selective introspection I have enlisted the help of a friend by getting him to agree to peruse these descriptions and choose the one he thinks best matches me. I will also try to get my wife to come up with the profile she thinks best describes me. I will not look at their selections until after I have come up with my own ratings.

Hey guys, Bag of Ass here. I am a real-life personal friend of Lobstrosity's, so I can independently weigh in on issues regarding his personal traits and features. I've read through these four profiles and I've made notes, recording the main points of each profile and giving them points (positive, negative, neutral) if they agree or disagree with how I perceive his personality and mental abilities. I ignored certain aspects of the profiles if I lacked info (things like his love life and sex life) or if they talked about things no one can really know about (things like his future and when they gave him advice). I did not read any other commentary on the profiles if others have posted before me. After reading each profile and reviewing my notes, I gave each profile a score ranging from zero to ten on how closely they matched my perception of him. I expected each profile to rate fairly moderately, that is in the middle of the scale. This is because the nature of most horoscopes is to be pretty vague and self-contradictory so as to always have some grain of accuracy...but enough of this commentary, on with the profiles!
Profile 1 Things I thought were applicable to him include things like his analytical mind, intellectual activities, abhorrence of violence, wit and curiosity, eloquent speech and writing, accomplishments through professional responsibilities, and that his work is largely driven through the desire of pleasure yet at times he can be lazy. Things I thought were contrary to him include things like good organization skills, resentful of the fate he has been dealt, constantly doubting his mental concepts, a cold childhood, things relating to his health, and that his opinions of people he deals with are idealistic and that we disappoint him when we don't live up to them. Overall, I rated Profile 1 as a 5/10 for how closely it describes Lobstrosity. Profile 2 Things I thought were applicable to him include things like his keen intuition and good critical faculties, his level of comfort with intangible ideas, his need to triumph at the expense of resources, a rational and skeptic (heh) mind, that he's self-assured, kind, and generous, his excellent family relations, and his love of life and nature. Things I thought disagreed with him include things like a need to be in an organized hierarchy, that his own affairs take precedence over others', that he seeks power, has an interest in the occult, that he is not interested in matters that are below him, and that he participates in many social affairs and parties and such. Overall, I rated Profile 2 as a 5.5/10 for how closely it describes Lobstrosity. Profile 3 Things I thought were applicable to him include things like his wish to succeed, a strive for pleasure, an avoidance of pain, good instincts and emotions, that he's clever and intelligent, a natural acceptance of life, a versatile mind that may be slightly superficial, a stubbornness, a strong attachment to those in his domestic life, a hate of deceit and double-talk and a value of honesty, favoring the profound (philosophy, religion, law, peace) over the trivial, human understanding and giving advice, and a feeling that competition leads to self-control and discipline. Things I thought disagreed with him include things like a favoring of the intuitive over the rational, impulsiveness, a need to become involved in the affairs of people he knows, aggressive action, a sense of extroversion and superiority. Overall, I rated Profile 3 as a 7.5/10 for how closely it describes Lobstrosity. Profile 4 Things I thought were applicable to him include things like a strong sense of home and family, intermittent periods of bustling activity and relaxation, that hard work yields a sense of self-worth, and he tends to retreat when things become hurtful. Things that I thought disagreed with him include things like strong leadership and organizational skills, an egocentric attitude (many of the attributes of this profile were related to this), and a tendency to flatter and criticize carelessly. Overall, I rated Profile 4 as a 3/10 for how closely it describes Lobstrosity. What does this all mean? I suppose I'm saying that if the horoscopes presented are legit, then it should be that Profile 3 corresponds to 7/19/79 at 5:07 PM, White Plains, NY. However, if it does, that doesn't necessarily mean that the horoscope is legit, it merely supports it. Another however, if Profile 3 does not match his birth info, it gives strong evidence that the horoscope is not legit. Now, what did he and his wife have to say about this? |

I have not looked at Bag's response yet, nor have I seen my wife's. Here are my thoughts:

Summary: Basically one giant miss. This doesn't seem to describe me at all beyond the sparse mentioning of "scientific nature" and "intellectual interests." Nothing else it said rang true in any way. I give it a 1/10. |

Summary: Some unimpressive hits coupled with some blatant misses. As a whole I don't see myself in this, but since parts of this could describe me if taken out of context I'll give it a 3.5/10 (I couldn't decide on a 3 or 4). |

Summary: Yeah, once again I do not see myself in this. I note a whole cornucopia of glaring misses with a few neutral tidbits scattered around for good measure. This one seems to fundamentally misconstrue my personality. I give it a 1/10. |

SUMMARY of summaries:
1) 1/10 2) 3.5/10 3) 1/10 4) 0/10 I know, I know, I'm probably overcritical, but I really don't see myself in any of those. Profile 2 was the closest, but I still felt it was way off the mark in critical areas. My true birthday is 7/19/79, so now all that remains is to find out which profile was actually mine. Oh, and here's how my wife scored me: 1) 2/10 2) 9/10 3) 0/10 4) 6/10 |

My summary:
1. 5/10 2. 5.5/10 3. 7.5/10 4. 3/10 The difference between our three responses suggests that either we don't know Lobstrosity well enough, that we're all differently biased, or that we tended to focus on different parts of the profiles and hence weighted things differently. Go go gadget Profile 3! |
