I saw it on TV a few years ago, shortly before the turn of the millenium. The trick is the priest goes to the secret place alone with the unlighted torch and comes back with it lit. Two possible explanations spring to mind:

1.) The torch is lit by the holy power of God, but God is shy so he only lets the one priest watch it happen.

2.) The priest has a Zippo up his sleeve.

Take your pick.

I touched the flame, I washed my face with it and I wasn’t burned. An immense peacefulness adorned my soul and I felted some kind of boosting of my powers.
That statement alone should speak volumes.

I agree. This whole thing reeks of a hoax. The "sealing" of the doors means nothing, since the priest goes in alone when the doors are opened. And the people who inspect the priest for any lighting mechanisms are the governor of Jerusalem and the head of police (in Jerusalem)? I wonder if they have a bias? I wonder how thorough of a search they perform? Do they strip search? Are they familiar with slight-of-hand tricks? Do they know what to look for?

This can be explain through The Placebo Effect. If the person realy believes, he's body will act in concordance...
Ever tried to give someone an aspirin an tell him that the pill is a powerful analgezic? I did. The Placebo Effect realy works on people.
