Post CS separation in recent American politics

Interesting summary of CS separation from Consortium News on the Newswire page (scroll down to "politics & religion", "theocratic agendas" and "Paula Jones"). Consortium News ties together a number of separate events.

You would think that fundamentalists would be at each others' throats, since each claims to have the One True Faith. But recent events show an unholy alliance between Christian Reconstructionists, the Rev. Moon, and Jewish fundamentalists in Israel who are destabilizing the region with their Biblically based land grab. They all came together to support Bush.

I wish I knew how to interpret it.

It looks very much like power-hungry individuals will use religion as part of their strategy to gain control. And people of various religions make temporary alliances with others for short term gain, which may later come back to bite them in the ass.

I would prefer this explanation to the idea that there are a lot of people who actually believe the nonsense.

What's the difference? People don't have to consciously know their real motives. A belief system that helps to butress one's own economic and political power is a very attractive one, much more so when one is absolutely convinced that it's The Truth. In fact, it's probably much better if they don't let themselves become aware of their ulterior motives.
