Well , I did find this:
http://www.infidels.org/library/maga...1/1flat90.html and this: http://www.lhup.edu/~dsimanek/febible.htm and this: http://www.timelinescience.org/resou.../flat/flat.htm I will conceede that I was wrong about Galileo. His heresy wasnt in saying that the world was round, but that the sun was the center of the solar system. It only took the church 400 years to apologize for it. here are some "flat earth societys", just tossed in for kicks: http://www.alaska.net/~clund/e_djubl...rthsociety.htm http://members.aye.net/~rms/fltearth.html <--especialy funny!! http://www.kzpg.com/Lib/Pages/Papers/bartlett.html http://peterjoyes.com/flatearth.html http://www.mi.uib.no/~stromme/apologetikk/flatjord.html |

Jan-
It seems to me that you are suggesting that what the Church teaches is not what is in the Bible. I concede that the Chruch and the Bible are two separate entities. But, how can you imply that the teachings of the Bible are not what the Church bases its teachings upon? I go to church because I am forced to (either go to church or move out, and living in santa cruz county doesn't make the second an option). Every sermon I have heard has been based upon what the Bible has to say. I would assume that's the way it is for other churches, or is the one I go to an exception? |

About sermons: in my experience you can find just about anything that you want to in the Bible, especially if you take it out of context. I have seen TV preachers do that to an extreme. It has been used both to justify Slavery and condemn it. On its own, even when not misquoted, there is quite a bit of ugly stuff that wouldn't seem right by today's standards. The Old Testament is especially bad, but the new certainly has advice in it that we really don't want people to follow. HW |

Actually most of the Bay Area is fairly sane compared to the level of fundamentalism in a lot of places. But the cost of living does make it hard to live alone unless you're a lawyer. I wonder what people think they're achieving by the "knuckle under or else" attitude. It seems tailor made to result in a lifetime of burning resentment. |
