Religious types and bigotry
I am always amazed at the amount of times that I hear born-again types or other religious fans, express bigoted or racist thoughts. I hear the "N word" freely said by fundies, along with any other prejudice that may come up. The religious state of grace they are in does not consider bigotry a sin.
It is no surprise, given that each sect damns the other to hell, yet the bigotry I refer to, includes the disparagement of people from their own cults. It astounds me that fundies can disparage people of other races who believe their same religion. They see no problem with it. The fundies I have seen, sure like to witness for bigotry. I guess that white fundies, really believe that heaven will be racially segregated and if any catholics are there, they will be in another area. Of course some catholics feel the same with an opposite set-up of course. Nice bunch. |

brands with close to the same regularity. I grew up in the South, but I have lived in Chicago and Boston, and have spent lots of time in Utah south of Salt Lake city. Even disregarding the religious viewpoints, the instances of out right discrimination and bigotry seem to be part of every community. What I have noticed is that the christian community will not admit that it has a problem, whereas the secular community is not afraid to bring injustices into the light of examination. The christians seem almost not to want to discuss the matter as they feel by virture of being a follower of Jesus has an automatic effect of nullifying and/or absolving them from even having to think about bigotry. They have somehow become immune to thoughs and actions that may be taken as discriminatory, simply because they say they are christians. Wolf |

Yes, it has always amazed me how can the christians declare that all Christians are brothers in Christ and continue to be racists? The missionaries during the British Raj had no problem in assuming that their Indian converts are automatically inferior. One of them actually complained that it is better to have lowcaste converts, because uppercaste converts "displaying ingratitude" think that they are as good as an european.

Wolf, thanks for your observations. I realize that bigotry is a natural human reaction. It probably has been selected for from our ancient hominid past. Yet, the pompous christians have put themselves on the fast tract to bliss because they are so high and mighty and yet they can't control themselves at all.
I agree with your point, and it is my big beef against the xtians on this issue, that they seem to feel that they are in a state where they can go out and be a nasty bigot without any feeling that it contradicts their religion. Here I am, Mr. atheist, who according to the fundies is an amoral nihilist, and I cringe at overt bigotry. According to the christians, I am going to hell, and yet they can be screaming bigots and are going to their heaven. The last point is how do they constitute their heaven? As Hinduwoman points out, I dare say that the English bigots who were in India would not concieve of a heaven where they had to share eternity with low-caste Indians! Do the US white Southern Baptists really think they will be in heaven with black Baptists? The christian heaven must reflect the bigotry of the religion, after all being a bigot is not a sin for the xtian god. Oh, man, christianity is a cess-pool. |

If you want to see true bigotry, check out Mad Kally and Koyaanisqatsi in this thread, who think that theism is a psychosis and that theists shouldn't be allowed to walk around freely.

also, it seems that Protestant missionaries are the most fanatical and bigoted, at least in India. |
