I am actually in Southern Utah, 6 miles from the AZ border. I work at The Spectrum (www.thespectrum.com) which has a circulation of about 25,000.

I like your theory on the doctor/professor/lawyer relationship to faith. I haven't had much experience meeting other non-theists as the few I know are members of my immediate family, or coworkers, or my husband. Back when I was in high school, it seemed the only non-theists were non-theists ONLY because most religions disapproved of the drugs, sex, theft, vandalism, etc. that they liked to participate in.

Default philosophy

Well I am currently a grad student in cultural studies, but have undergrad degrees in philosophy and eng lit. I myself didn't need science to justify my atheism, good ol' common sense and music, interestingly enough, did that quite easily. I must clarify it wasn't any particular idea celebrated in the music i listened too, it all started with my uncle's judgement that what I listen to was the work of the devil and was sinful. The more I thought about this the more that other christian prohibitions against things such as sex, and anything else that is fun, seemed more and more ridiculous.
god bless you all god damn it!

I'm a Safety Engineer in a gubmint research laboratory. I keep people with advanced degrees from blowing up our buildings and themselves, injuring themselves with lasers, irradiating themselves with energetic materials, etc.

The old saying "Common sense is not so common" applies perfectly to many of the people I work with.
