why do christians wear crucifixes?
Do you ever see John Lennon fans wearing miniature revolvers around their necks? How about something a little more sensitive for the sake of Jesus, such as a pair of sandals, or perhaps a fish (feeding of the five thousand) Do you think that jesus would really want to see the instrument of his own cruel demise?
John Lennon died for the sins of another person. Jesus died for the sins of everyone. The Romans killed Jesus for being an infidel, or a threat to Roman polytheism. Forgive my ignorance in this matter, if I haven't got my *facts* right, but regardless of whether he died for our sins or not, I think that the wearing of the crucifix, is a very odd custom. Does it strike anyone else as being odd? Why the crucifix? To remind us of the modus operandi? Alright, he died for our sins, but we don't need to remind ourselves, how he died, do we? It wasn't even his intention to die for our sins, was it? The Romans killed him. Then it occurred to him: 'Hey! I'm dying for your sins. I'm dying because you don't like me, and therefor that makes it wrong, or unjust' note: (I'm not the first to notice this. The late Bill Hicks, for instance, spoke at length on this very subject.) |

Well the mormons say they don't have those symbols because they should remember jesus's life, not his death, or something like that, I think that's what I read on the mormon webpage

Yeah, one of my favorite jokes is:
"What if Jesus existed today instead of 2000 years ago? Then people would walk around with miniature electric chairs around their necks!" This greatly offended a Christian friend, though I still don't really understand why. -B |

As a general rule of thumb, the Catholic and Orthodox will wear crucifixes, while Protestants prefer crosses. In both cases, the focus is on the crucified Christ as a sacrifice for sin.
The Christian does not find this symbol depressing, because:

To ward off Vampires!
To ward of VAMPIRES of course, don't you watch the movies?
When I was a kid I watched one too many vampire movies on Saturday's "Monster Movie Matinee" and so of course I thought the cross would protect me from the vampires. LOL. When I was 10 or 11 I watched "The Omen" movies and that scared the begeeses out of me. I began wearing a cross religously to protect myself from these demons that I thought must be every where, waiting to get me. Never underestimate the power of the media on children. Thank goodness I out grew all that nonsense. As a child it never crossed my mind that the cross was a gruesome torture symbol. Nobody points that out very often if at all. |

There are a couple of different reasons. Some Christians wear them simply because they think they are "cool" or "fashionable".
Others wear them because they never want to forget the incredible sacrifice God allowed and Jesus underwent, so that their relationship with God could be restored. I don't wear one simply because I don't like jewelry. Kevin |

Sweep, Romans did not kill Jesus for being a threat to polytheism. If you take the bible story as accurate, it was the Jews who demanded his execution and the Roman magistrate who refused to have anything to do with it.
