Well, blu, we use this little molecule called ATP for energy to power our cells. We humans (along with other "lower" animals, bacteria, fungi, etc) make our own ATP from the foods we eat. The foods we eat are metabolized and are eventually shunted into this metabolic pathway called the Citric acid cycle to produce the reducing equivalents NADH and FADH2 via a series of redox reactions. NADH and FADH2 are used to, in part, drive another process called oxidative phosphorylization which occurs at ATP synthases located in the membranes of cellular organelles
called mitochondria. Oxidation of NADH results in establishment of a proton gradient that drives the phosphorylation and conversion of ADP to ATP. .... So, basically Blu, what you described about the "energy" of the heart and brain is a bunch of touchy-feely mumbo-jumbo invented by humans with too much time on their hands to assuage our species' generally tendency towards the narcissistic notion that we are actual "special". Is this a good example of 'reductionism' past any logical sense of the question being discussed? |

Well interesting. I was referring to all that is behind all biological function. I guess I am unable to define what I mean as well as I would like. Are you saying we are nothing special? I think all life is very special. If you believe this about everyone, you must think the same about yourself, which must be a tad depressing. That is all I have to say for now. I went on a post splurge earlier and now I am all tapped out. thanks |

so I guess I was reallly asking if this web site was predominently fascist. I thought I would get an answer from the Adminitrator who, someone pointed out, was a part of the system of people who were involved in creating this web site whoever "they" are.
This Administrator lives in Taiwan, and is 12 hours off from the rest of you. All I asked you to do was to divide up your questions into two or three posts and put them in the forums where they belong. I do not understand your response. It is simple courtesy to keep things on-topic and smoothly flowing. We hope you stick around and dialogue. Most of us don't think learning and understanding the ATP-ADP cycle is depressing, but rather, find it fascinating and beautiful to be a living organism on this planet. Michael |

When I think of physical, I think of physical as being something we can touch and feel with our hands. Can you touch light? Can you touch ultra-violet radiation etc?
Yes and yes. Go out in the sun naked for a few hours without sunscreen and you'll learn how touching light and UV radiation feels. Or use a magnifying glass to focus the sunlight on your palm for a few seconds for a quicker experience of touching light with your hand. |
