Grad student, huh? that means, in all likelihood, they had a tape recorder on or about their person.

I'd have dug it out, held it up to the cop and sweetly asked them to repeat that request.

I would have taken the office'rs badge number and explained to him that the Georgia Supreme Court struck down the lewd bumber-sticker law in 1991, and if he still wanted to give me a ticket he'd hear from my lawyer.

I met a girl who was told by a Savannah policeman to either cover up or take off a "Fuck Censorship" sticker on her car. I don't remember if she did it or not.
I doubt the guy even realized the irony of his action...

yeah I heard of this, as I live in florida. There was a license plate once [one of the "florida manatees" design] and it read "EAT UMM", which was revoked. also, there was one of the "challenger" design, and it said "BOOM" and it was revoked. the Atheist license plate, of course, isn't offensive as those, and it should be allowed. when I first got my license, my plates read "ISLAM1". (hey, it was my mum's car, ok?!) lol.

Heh, has Floriduh recalled that "A55 RGY" plate yet?

(bear in mind, there's a peach between A55 and RGY...and a peach looks a lot like the letter O...you take it from there )

Since license plates are a government operation, if there is still separation of church and state in Florida, it should hold that the word BAPTIST can also not be displayed on a plate. I'd be curious if anyone could research that.

As I recall, that was how the owner of the plate backed the state down. They would have had to cancell any plate that any group signed a petition or letter to complain about. In fact at the time he was publicly supported by one or more clergymen who saw the danger of this kind of censorship.

The sword swings both ways and the people who wrote the initial letter of complaint about the Atheist plate were too damn stupid to figure that out. Kind of like shooting yourself in the foot with your own pistol. As I remember, there were only about a dozen or so people from a particular church who signed that letter.

And, IIRC, there were some questionable signatures on the complaint.

OK I'll plead ignorance:

I keep seeing people using "IIRC" in posts-------what does it mean?
