Default platypus

The venom contained in the spur of a platypus is at its most potent during the mating season. Bloody females always cause problems

I didn't know until about 6 months ago...that's why I like these kinds of threads...and yes a spur in the ankle delivers a very painful venom. It's not lethal to people, but causes excrutiating pain that DOESN'T RESPOND TO MORPHINE...can you imagine? The thought is it is used as protection.

The spur only occurs on male platypuses (platypi? ). So the spur may be more of a mating competition weapon than a general protection weapon.

I find this quite an interesting example of convergent evolution:

Oh please. The platypus is obviously of duck-kind.

Default platypuses

I think the poor little animals would upset at being called mammals. They are monotremes, egg laying but suckle their young
