I think you are reading much more into the text than is actually there.

I guess it caused people some confusion when they first recited the verse. Or perhaps it was a well kept secret. Well, anyways the verse on Big Bang is not that ambiguous.

Nonsense. Eratosthenes performed his calculation of the earth's radius in something like 200 B.C., and he wasn't even the first to try.

all this flat vs. round earth brings up a question for me.

Are we trying to assert that the religion reveals these things or that the practicioners of these religions knew these things by means other than revelation but that their faith's didn't require them to reject these notions?

If Islam is so pro-science why have non-Muslims made the vast majority of scientific discoveries during the past 500 or so years? Lest I be accused of being a white supremist, I would note that Japan has adapted very well to the scientific age. They are also one of the least religious nations in the world.

Dargo,

A dearth of discoveries in Islamic countries recently is probably due more to social and political forces than an inherit problem with the faith itself. For more details see my earlier post.

The Japanesse modernized so well because they were a homogenous (ie fewer social destractions) culture that were lead by a strong central govt. into a modernization program for national security an prestige reasons.

All is interpretation. However, there is nothing in the Quran that contradicts Evolution.

Before you claim too much for islam and science, River, I would refer you to this book and this one by Pervez Hoodbhoy, who is a distinguished scientist from Pakistan and a muslim.

In fact, I think I'm the only one on these boards who admits to hating science and choosing faith as opposed to it.
Well then, I guess we won't be hearing from you anymore. If you hate science, you must also hate computers and technology of any kind.
