God's Secretaries: The Making of the King James Bible by Adam Nicholson
I have been reading reviews of this book, and wondered if anyone here has read it (although this book may be of more interest to students of the English language than the Bible.) A Great Music Quote:

There are also people who genuinely believe this. Pointing it out to people who haven't thought through some of the consequences of the stories in the bible can be cheap entertainment. Btw, the Bible is a gigantic game of chinese whispers. It was passed from generation to generation as oral tradition long before it was written down, and it has been translated and retranslated over the last 2000 odd years, usually by people who couldn't agree on what words mean, resulting in multiple conflicting versions. Apparantly God inspires the chosen to know and understand The True Bible, and when they tell us what they believe, we're supposed to magically have faith in the right one, because until we choose and believe the right one God can't inspire us to believe that we made the right choice. And you're worried about one single source of errors in the Bible? |
