Dr. Universe's site is pretty neat, even for this crusty old adult. In the link above, the good doctor asks a fellow professor, an anthropologist, "about ways in which religion may have helped humans evolve."

Similarity of interpretation and revenge are offered as forming the basis. Revenge struck me pretty hard, given my Christian heritage. Do the "right thing" and go to Heaven. Choose another path, and hi-ho, it's off to Hell you go.
