Christian Resurgence in the UK
Please ignore any reports of an upsurge in christian devotion in the UK, which you may have seen reported recently on CNN. These will probably be misrepresented by fundamentalist Xian organisations in the US to suggest their particular brand of nonsense is having some effect on us bewildered Britons. Well it's not. Whilst it is true that large crowds have been congregating after dark, to hold hands and sing Hallelujah, it is totally disingenuous not to mention this all takes place on Myra Hindley's grave.

Myra Hindley - if I had a copy of the mugshot, I'd post it on the 'Pictures as Proof' thread. If someone hasn't already.

A very excellent Catholic indeed.
So good was she that she longed to be freed from jail (those outside the UK may not know that she and her boyfriend Ian Brady sexually assaulted, tortured and murdered five young people, including a ten-year old girl whose pleas for mercy they tape recorded. They buried their victims on bleak moorland, and had picnics on their graves) so she could go out into the community and do good works. She manipulated a number of well-intentioned and influential individuals, principally the deeply-religious Labour peer Lord Longford, who were attracted by her notoriety and campaigned for her early release from prison. In the eyes of Longford, her conversion to Catholicism did much to strengthen her case for being released; cynical observers thought it odd that this newly-reformed character should be so keen to get out of jail. Her conversion would have been more impressive if she had given up her fight for parole and accepted that the least she could do was to spend the remainder of her days behind bars. If she had been released, perhaps she could have joined Mother Theresa and helped her torture dying children in Calcutta. |

I must say that while I am against capital punishment for all sorts of good reasons, Hindley is the ultimate trial of my principles.
I am so glad she died before the judges managed to rule that her imprisonment was a denial of her human rights. |

Out of curiosity, when did she commit her crimes? (And are you sure she's a female; she looks like a guy in a bad wig.)

Whoa, your title had me freaked out. I was worried Europe was starting to head back to the dark ages too.
Glad all is well! -Nick |

Ian Brady and Myra Hindley committed their crimes in the mid-60s, not too long after Britain abolished the death penalty. Actor/director Emlyn Williams wrote a book on the Moors Murders entitled Beyond Belief. |
