How is it blasphemy to stand on the images, but not blasphemy to destroy the sandals in the store? What's the difference?

I wont pretend to know what's going through their minds, but maybe it's the same reasoning that was the foundation of the movement to cover up all the paintings on church walls and ceilings after the reformation. But then again, in this case some of them are Catholics, so I don't really know...

In cultures, especially Asian cultures that I know about, where you walk in sandals or barefooted, the feet are very dirty, and it is a mark of disrepect to show someone the bottom of your feet.

Destruction, however, may be a sacred act.

Fore example, in this country, when there were official Rules for respecting the American flag, it was disrespectful to let the flag even touch the ground. It was also dispresectful to wear it as an article of clothing. But when your flag wore out, the respectful way of disposing of it was to burn it.

I'm not saying that this is logical. There is obviously a lot of magical thinking going on here - that the image of a holy person has to be treated as if it were valuable in itself. But there is some method to the madness.
