Do xians want the world to end?
I've been getting sick of this utterly depressing concept (a concept which I disbelieve, of course). Everywhere I go, it seems that the local fundies are proclaiming impending doom. Even in the media, there was an article in Time about xianity and the end of the world. And let's not forget Tim LaHaye's books. It is getting really tiresome hearing this constantly. Why is this attitude so dominant? It is totally alien to human progress. I guess they should all stop working and whatnot, since its all going to be destroyed by their big invisible man. I wish these fundies would just shut up.
Like George Carlin said, the Earth has been here for 4.5 billion years, and in that time has undergone ice ages, plate tectonics, asteroid impacts, and other things. It isn't going anywhere anytime soon. Besides, there have been end of the world predictions since probably the dawn of civilization. None of us should even be here or even existed in the first place. Any comments? |

But THIS time they'll be right! Make enough doomsday predictions, one day, ONE of them will become true.

What do Christians care about the end of the world? It's allegedly just another beginning.

Let's spread the lunacy around some...It's not only the Christians thinking the world is going to end...If all that Y2K nonsense was doomsday hype, then what was it??
Besides we all know know the world IS going to end...how many million years to go before our sun fails??? |

By the by, do you know if this line ever appeared in any of Adams' HHGTG series: "Ford, there's an infinite number of monkeys outside who want to talk about this script for Hamlet they've worked out"? [added] Looks like that was in the original book! It's been a long time since I read that one it seems. I'm not that much of an expert, just a devoted follower of the great prophet Zarquon. I loved the episode where the philosophers went on strike because the computer was going to blurt out the answer to life, the universe and everything, but nobody noticed any difference. Marvin the Paranoid Android is my all time hero. Anyway, this is getting off topic - I'll go back to being dead for tax reasons. Cheers, John |

Xians believe death is the only salvation from life. It goes back to the dark ages of myth, fantasy, and legend.
In life you will have god In Death you will have god Death is easy, why spend eternity looking for god? Life is hard, why spend eternity trying to find god? Life takes strength and determination. Death takes weakness and cowardice. This has and still is mans biggest issue with existence since mans inception. |

Depending on the Christian in question, I think it's somewhere between a desire to have everlasting bliss (I've only met a few people with Rapturitis who actually BELIEVE they're going to hell, instead of heaven) and a desire to watch their enemies suffer for eternity (again, most Rapture-heads think the people they don't like are going to hell), or a mixture of the two.
They're both normal human desires, maybe minus the eternal part. I think what religion has done is stretch them out, beef them up, and then persuade some people that they are actually in reach without the person having to take any steps towards actual bliss or vengeance. After all, if you are saved by faith alone, or if God and Jesus decide who are going to heaven based on some incomprehensible plan, then all you need to do is lean back and believe, and enjoy the smell of burning human flesh. -Perchance. |

Although man will give a good go at destroying it, planet earth will not be destroyed. However, there will be an increase in human activity that will threaten to do major harm to life on this planet. The Bible actually teaches that Jesus will return to liberate the earth from total destruction and establish his kingdom in Jerusalem.
I agree with you. There is a lot of talk about a doomsday for the planet that will never happen. However, there will be a doomsday for Satan and all who chose to follow him. |
