Showdown looms over judicial appointments

Quote:
At yesterday's meeting, Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (Vt.), ranking Democrat on the committee, submitted a statement saying that, after a hearing on Estrada's nomination last year, Leahy was "left with more questions than answers after all of the steps Mr. Estrada took to avoid answering questions." He said Estrada's nomination has "generated tremendous controversy -- in part because he appears to have been groomed to be an activist appellate judge by well-placed conservatives."

Democrats discuss filibuster

Quote:
On Wednesday, Kennedy told his Democratic colleagues, "If we allow a stealth right-winger on this court, we have only ourselves to blame."

"We must filibuster Miguel Estrada's nomination," he told lawmakers at the weekly Democratic policy lunch. "The White House is almost telling us that they plan to nominate him to the Supreme Court. We can't repeat the mistake we made with [Supreme Court Justice]Clarence Thomas."

Dems to Filibuster Estrada

edited to add:

Quote:
Nan Aron, president of the Alliance for Justice ( www.afj.org and www.independentjudiciary.com ), a national coalition of more than 60 organizations that advocates for an independent judiciary, says the decision of most Democratic senators to work to block Estrada is a major breakthrough. But, she adds, "The administration is going to put a lot of pressure on swing Democrats to break with their leadership and support Estrada. Our job in the next few weeks is to tell the Democrats to hold firm, and to start putting pressure on moderate Republicans. This is a fight that I think we can win, but there is no question that the fight is a long way from finished."

Both WI Senators Support Filibuster

Quote:
[Herb] Kohl said it was obvious that Estrada "has opinions on these things, so why didn't he answer (our questions)? Their position is, 'Screw you guys, we don't need to answer.' Our position is that's not fair."
...
"It destroys the process of advice and consent. There is a constitutional role the Senate is supposed to play," [Russ] Feingold said. "If we're not given basic information, we can't get any sense of where they stand. They'll just send up all kinds of people that have no record, and there won't be any really meaningful review process. . . . They just want us to rubber-stamp everybody."

Thank gawd for whoever it was who invented the filibuster. If it wasn't for the filibuster we'd all be in deep you know what.
