Default DoJ bars Internal Gay Pride Event

John "Mein Kampf" Ashcroft does it again...

DoJ Bars Gay Pride Event

Homosexual employees of the US Department of Justice have been forbidden to hold an annual "Gay Pride" event at the department's headquarters, a gay DoJ employee said Friday. Attorney General John Ashcroft "will not allow us to hold our annual pride ceremony in the building," said Melissa Schraibman, who works in Justice Department's tax division.

Yikes - this
Quote:
According to Schraibman, the prohibition is "in accord with a new department policy that prohibits commemoration unless it is supported by a presidential proclamation."

"This is something we have never heard of before," she said. "It doesn't exist in writing yet."
In contrast with THIS
Quote:
Schraibman said that other groups of DoJ employees -- including those belonging to ethnic or special interest groups -- continue to use the Department building as a meeting place.
...sounds like big trouble. I hope they (the Pride organizers) pursue this mercilessly.

Didn't they just sponsor a Good Friday service led by F. Graham?

They said that it should not offend anyone because it was not mandatory to attend.

How the hell is this any different?

Ashcroft was subjected to a lot of criticism last year from the religious right for even allowing the event and sending a deputy to speak at it, even though he did not endorse it.

Google cache has an article from last year about the DOJ Gay Pride celebration -

Conservative Groups Slam Ashcroft on Gay Pride Party

Two conservative groups pounded Attorney General John Ashcroft on Thursday for allowing Deputy Attorney General Larry Thompson to speak to a group of Justice Department employees at their annual Gay, Lesbian, and Bisexual Pride program held at DOJ headquarters on Wednesday evening.

"Just because he is fighting terrorist threats is no excuse to allow an officially sanctioned celebration by his department of immoral, unhealthy behavior that is illegal in nearly 20 states," said Robert Knight, director of the Culture and Family Institute. "I have to ask: Why is Mr. Ashcroft, a committed Christian, using his official capacity to celebrate sin?"

Knight added that he thought it was a slap in the face to groups that supported Ashcroft's nomination as attorney general.

"After all the work we did to stand up to the liberal mudslinging during Ashcroft's confirmation fight, this is what we get?" Knight said. . . .

Hopefully, this will let the Log Cabin Republicans know that they're in the wrong party. (See What Gay Friendly Republicans? )

Thumbs down

Well, isn't that a clever way to implicate Ashcroft. Otherwise, Knight would look pretty stupid exhorting the Attorney General to act on behalf of Christianity and calling his actions, "a slap in the face to groups that supported Ashcroft's nomination as attorney general."

What happened to the tradition of tolerant legal objectivity? Did it ever exist?

I'm not aware of any state law that makes being a homosexual illegal. I think these laws are usually related to sodomy.

Was the DoJ group planning to have a sodomy event or something?
