As was pointed out in another thread, both of those jolly old elves have many characteristics in common.
I was thinking that by getting small children to buy into the Santa myth (and reinforcing it with presents) you indoctrinate them into a general acceptance of theistic archetypes. This makes it easier to switch them over to God, who sadly only promises presents someday in the future. cheers, Michael |

The lump of coal received for disobeying Santa seems pretty similar to the concept of hell for disobeying god. God is Santa for adults, just with higher stakes.
