What are Dreams?
Do we know what dreams are yet, and/or what function they serve? Why humans get all grumpy and spacy if they go several days without going into dream-type sleep?
I mean, I know there are theories as to what dreams are, but is there any evidence to support any of them? |

I suspect dreams themselves are the product of the brain attempting to construct a coherent narrative out of relatively random chain reactions which reinforce newly formed neural pathways as well as preventing the degeneration of older pathways. It is not difficult to see how this not occurring would have a negative impact.

Batch processing of relational database updates, dreaming is just a side product, sort of like one side of the brain is being a filing clerk whilst the other looks on trying to figure out wtf is going on.
